"My studio output evolves around my ongoing and constant experimentation of painting, photography and graphic design. Using a canvas as a starting point, I begin to contemplate how I might use the space in terms of colour, shape, perspective and imagery. This process may be informed by sketches on paper, or it could draw from scenes from my own travels, photographic references, browsing books, the web or my dreams. Once I have an outline for the overall character and mood I’m aiming to create, I begin to form the composition. As the work develops, I inevitably encounter refinements to my original ideas as new ideas form: there is no guaranteed route that the painting will take. I listen to these intuitions that may arrive from my subconscious or through leaving the painting and coming back to it the next day."

The focus of Cartwright’s latest body of work are the sun-soaked scenes of California: a place which has intrigued, and inspired the artist from a very early age. In March 2018, the work was debuted at The Other Art Fair in Los Angeles to a great response. The artist garnered new connections, clients, inspiration from the west coast and sold all fourteen works.
